Dan Young applauded for work with Special Olympics
4/13/2011
Dan Young recently received the CJ Ramstad Unsung Hero Award for his work supporting the 2011 Northland 300 snowmobile ride. The award is given to 'the participant who quietly does good for the ride' and is named after C.J. Ramstad whose tireless involvement at all levels of the sport of snowmobiling – from land-use advocacy to club promotion and race history preservation – made him one of the most influential and recognizable figures in all of snowmobiling.
The Northland 300 is a three hundred mile, three day charity snowmobile ride that raises funds to support Special Olympics Minnesota. This year's event started on January 27th at Superior Shores Resort in Two Harbors, with snowmobile teams making a roundtrip to Ely and then back to Two Harbors on January 29th. This is Dan's third year in volunteering his time for the organization. Dan also serves as legal counsel to the Board of Directors for the Northland 300.
Since the first ride in 1989, Northland 300 participants have raised in excess of $3.3 million to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota, with $180.850 being raised in 2011. The Northland 300 is one of the Special Olympics' main fundraisers in Minnesota and all funds go directly to support Special Olympics Minnesota. Special Olympics Minnesota provides year round sports training and competition for people with intellectual disabilities that contribute to life-long physical fitness, personal growth and achievements.
Kathy Karkula, Development Director for Special Olympics Minnesota and the Volunteer Event Director for the Northland 300, says that Dan Young is very dedicated to the athletes of Special Olympics Minnesota. We are very fortunate to have his support and participation.
