Michelle Kuhl has joined Lommen Abdo as a litigation associate, where she will work on a wide variety of cases including professional liability, commercial litigation and transportation-related litigation. She will also continue her emphasis on appeals. Michelle clerked at the Minnesota Supreme Court this past year (2016-2017), where she worked closely with the appellate judges on a variety of criminal, civil and administrative matters. She brings a creative yet pragmatic approach to her practice, always with an eye toward achieving the best outcome and providing maximum value to her clients.

“I developed a passion for appellate litigation through several unique work experiences,” Michelle said. “During law school, I worked in the Child Welfare Appellate Clinic where I represented a mother appealing the termination of her parental rights. I worked with a supervising professor to submit a brief to the Michigan Court of Appeals on my client’s behalf. Also during law school, I practiced my appellate litigation skills through two moot courts and an oral advocacy competition. These experiences drove me to obtain my position as a law clerk for Justice Barry Anderson. I enjoyed being a part of the Minnesota Supreme Court’s decision-making process through the research and recommendations that I provided to the court.”

“My experience at the Minnesota Supreme Court taught me the research and writing skills that are critical for an appellate litigation associate. As a law clerk, I was often assigned cases in diverse areas of law with which I had little experience. These cases usually required me to research complicated issues of first impression in Minnesota,” Michelle continued. “I quickly conducted this research and developed expertise in these areas. I then provided recommendations to the court through written bench memoranda and answered verbal questions from the justices based on my research. Because I read all the briefs submitted by the parties, I have learned which brief-writing strategies are most effective. This experience has taught me the importance of thorough research, clear writing, and proper grammar.”

Before clerking with the Minnesota Supreme Court, Michelle was an extern at the U.S. District Court during her first year of law school. She also served as articles editor of the University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform. Michelle obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota, B.A. in political science, with high distinction, and her juris doctorate from the University of Michigan Law School, J.D., magna cum laude, Order of the Coif.
